“PUPPY HEALED DOG”
Before
little Peanut came along, I had another wonderful rescue dog named Spike. He
taught me many great life lessons. This is one of them.
I
opened the sliding glass door and in came Spike from the yard. His left eye
looked a little red but I didn’t think much of it at the time. By the next day
his eye was really red and droopy. It looked awful! My roommate Jane and I
questioned whether or not we should take him to the vet, but past experience
made us not trust the vet, so we decided against it. Spike didn’t appear to be
having any pain, so we waited a few days to pray and see how it went.
Once
before, Spike had gotten stung by a scorpion and it paralyzed his whole back
end. We prayed for him and he was totally healed in about four days. This time
we prayed for his eye, but my faith was weak.
Matthew
11:23-24 says that when you pray, believe and don’t doubt. I believed God would
heal his eye, but then when I looked at his poor awful droopy red eye, I would
get worried, and I doubted and thought maybe I should take him to the vet, even
though I knew in my heart that the vet would do no good.
James
1:6b-8 says: “For he that is wavering is like a wave of the sea driven with the
wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of
the Lord. A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways.”
That
was me—believing for healing one minute and doubting in the next. What was
amazing is that his eye was responding accordingly—it looked healed, and then
it would get all red and droopy again. It was confusing and guilt was getting
in, both about not going to the vet, and about not believing God for the
healing.
After
a short period of this going back and forth, Jane said, “Look, Carolyn, you’ve
got to agree with me on this healing!” She was right. Jesus said, “Again I say
unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that
they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven”
(Matt 18:19). We asked and we agreed, but then I had to make my mouth confess
it.
Second
Corinthians 4:8 says, “We look not at the things which are seen, but at the
things which are not seen.” And Romans 4:17 tells us to call those things that
be not as though they already were.
That’s
what Abraham did. When God told Abram and Sarah they were going to be the
father and mother of many nations, Sarah was already far past the age of having
children, but that didn’t stop the invisible words from coming to pass. It wasn’t
easy for them to believe, since in the natural they were both really old. But God
had to do something amazing for them, which is a great lesson for us.
It
had been 24 years since the promise was made, but still, no children. Their
faith just wasn’t there. They wavered like I did with my little dog Spike. So God
told Abram he had to stop calling himself Abram and change his name to Abraham,
which means “father of many nations.” So every time someone called him or
whenever he talked about himself, he was hearing out loud, “You’re a father of
many nations.”
After
doing this it was only three months before Sarah was pregnant with Isaac! (See
Gen 12-18.)
The
Lord showed me that I could do that with Spike’s eye and that I should start calling
him “Puppy Healed Dog.” I spoke right to him and said things like “Look at you,
your eye is healed. Jesus healed your eye. You’re ‘Puppy Healed Dog.’”
After
I did that, his eye took about two weeks to totally heal. During that time, there
were days when his eye went red and droopy again, but I didn’t let any words of
doubt or fear come out of my mouth. Instead I just kept saying that Spike was “Puppy
Healed Dog,” and he became exactly that.
When
we’re wavering, we aren’t peaceful enough or calm enough to even receive true
wisdom of what to do in a situation. But finally when I believed without
wavering, Spike's eye was healed.
“Through
faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the WORDS of God, so
that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Heb 11:3).
The
invisible things are more powerful than the visible things. The invisible is
what has creative power. God Himself is invisible to us, yet He created everything
in the beginning from His own spoken words. When we speak words, we don’t see
the letters, but in our minds we see an image. When we speak the images that the
Lord gives us by faith, they will come to pass. God tells us, “I create the
fruit of the lips” (Is 57:19a).
What
an amazingly wonderful blessing that is!
God’s
will is to heal and to bless. It is possible for ordinary people to speak THE
WORDS OF THE LORD that He gives us, the Words of God without
wavering, and get the results. Abraham became the father of many nations and Spike
became Puppy Healed Dog.
Love,
Carolyn
